The discovery of a Roman ring in Somerset by Kevin Minto, a former soldier and lorry driver turned metal detectorist, has sparked excitement and curiosity. This extraordinary find, weighing 48 grams and dating back to around AD297, is a testament to the craftsmanship of the Roman era. The ring, set with a finely engraved gemstone depicting the goddess Victoria driving a two-horse chariot, is a rare and spectacular piece that has been described as an "unparalleled discovery for Britain" by the South West Heritage Trust. The trust acquired the ring along with a hoard of 297 Roman coins for £78,000, ensuring its preservation in Somerset. Minto, who split his half of the proceeds with a friend, was able to pay off his mortgage and reduce his lorry driving days. The ring's discovery on the day of a military veterans' detecting rally led to a dispute over the proceeds, but it has now been resolved. The South West Heritage Trust's senior curator, Amal Khreisheh, highlighted the ring's large size, heavy weight, and exquisite craftsmanship, noting its rarity and the contrast between the simple elegance of the gemstone design and the extravagant amount of gold used. The ring's discovery provides valuable insights into the Roman inhabitants of south Somerset during a period of unrest from 286-296. Khreisheh suggests that the ring may have been buried shortly after 297 as part of a hoard, and it could have belonged to a wealthy Roman, such as a governor, merchant, or landowner. The ring is now on a tour of primary schools and will be given a permanent home at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton, where it will continue to educate and inspire future generations about the rich history of the region.
